Adding Curb Appeal to Your Home

Aug 10

If you are considering putting your home on the market or just want to increase the overall value of your home, it is important for you to first add some curb appeal. The exterior of your home is the first thing prospective buyers will see and can almost always make or break the deal. Here are a few simple tips for adding curb appeal to your home.

Keeping the lawn in tip-top shape- Many people may not realize it, but a well-maintained lawn will allow you to sell your home much quicker. Most people won’t even think twice about a house with a poor exterior. Think about it; how likely would you be to buy a house with 5 foot tall weeds growing throughout the lawn?

Add some simple landscaping- Don’t go out and spend a fortune on fancy shrubs, but do make sure to dress your lawn up a little. Add a few small bushes here and there to give your lawn character. Also, make sure to keep these bushes and shrubs well maintained; you don’t want stray branches sprouting out all over the place.

Maintain your driveway- If you have an asphalt driveway; make sure to seal it as needed. Make sure all concrete driveways are not missing huge chunks here and there. If you have a simple stone driveway, make sure it is weed-free and bring in a truckload of stone if necessary. You do not want potential buyers to mistake your driveway for an extension of your yard.

Paint it- If you have an older house with wooden siding; make sure it is not in need of a fresh paint of coat. If it does need to be painted, be sure to scrape off as much of the old paint as possible and primer it before applying the actual colored paint. When painting, be careful not to get paint all over the windows and doors; if you do, immediately clean it off to avoid problems later on.

Plant a garden- Depending on the time of year, you may choose to plant a garden. You can choose either a vegetable garden or a flower garden. The main thing to remember about gardens is to keep them well weeded. A garden can add character to your lawn and add curb appeal to your home.

Whether you choose to go with one tip or all five, make sure to follow the project through completely. Merely doing a mediocre attempt at it will more than likely hurt your curb appeal rather than improve it.
